On Wednesday President Barack Obama issued new orders to speed up infrastructure projects, aimed at putting construction workers back to work and helping rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges and other jobs.

Approximately $527 million will be rewarded to the Department of Transportation by the end of the year to fund repairing roads and bridges across the country. In addition he is ordering to expedite reviews of applications for other transportation projects in 2012.

“There’s work to be done. There are workers ready to do it. The American people are behind this,” he said the president in a speech held before the Francis Scott Key Bridge to an audience of construction workers.

The president also took a moment to criticize the congressional Republicans for blocking legislation and wasting time on debating frivolous issues such as whether the phrase “In God We Trust” be the official U.S. motto.

“I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work,” he said.
