Hundreds of women stood arm locked with each other outside Virginia State Capitol on Tuesday as gathered to protest Monday’s scheduled voting on a bill that would require “transvaginal” ultrasounds for women seeking to have abortions. It is part of the latest wave in anti-abortion and anti-contraceptive legislation sweeping many conservative states over the last couple of weeks.

The crowd of nearly 1,000 people, mostly women, lined the pathway leading up to the capitol building. According to Virginia capitol ground rules, the right to protest, hold signs, assemble, chant or yell is not allowed. Therefore, people, who mostly came together through Facebook and word-of-mouth, joined together on a cold Monday and stood in unified silence as Virginia lawmakers made their way to legislative session in the capitol.

Capitol and state police were on hand to ensure order. No incidents were recorded.

Later that day, Virginia Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell, who was poised to swiftly sign the abortion ultrasound bill, decided to hold off on a vote, leaving the possibility it may be amended or dropped.
